Firmly Grounded

One of the popular board games over the years is Bible Trivia. In the game players are asked questions about the Bible. For most it turned out to be more about what you didn’t know than what you did know.

As I thought about the name of that game I realized it was one of the greatest mismatches of words of all time. Trivia is defined as unimportant matters. There is nothing unimportant about the Bible. Sadly, many today approach Bible study and knowledge as unimportant in relation to other aspects of life.

The importance of God’s Word is set forth in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for

correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly

equipped for every good work.”   (NKJV)

That is an all-encompassing revelation from God of the importance of the Bible and its equipping power.

In 2017 we will be sharing a sermon emphasis entitled “Firmly Grounded”. Over the course of the year we will be sharing about the nature and attributes of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We will examine the nature of humanity and sinfulness as well as the theology of the church. Too often we are blown by the winds of culture and it is vitally important that we understand that our foundation, our “roots,” must be in the Bible.

In Jeremiah 9:23 and 24 we find these words: Thus says the Lord:

"Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the Lord.” (NKJV)

Would you join me in this prayer for the coming year? “Father, I pray you find great delight in my life as I seek to know and  understand you.”

 Keep the faith.
